Why Does Jesus Call Us to Be Baptized?

If Jesus has already forgiven my sins, if I believe in Him, and if my life is changing—why do I still need baptism? That’s a very good question. And what helped me here was not human tradition, but Jesus Himself. Before leaving His disciples, Jesus said: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).

Think about that. Jesus didn’t say, “If someone wants to, they can think about it.” He gave His disciples a very clear direction: make disciples and baptize them. Why? Because baptism is about much more than water.

Baptism Is Your Response

Maybe you already believe in Jesus. Maybe at some point in your life you realized that you wanted to live differently. Perhaps you have even prayed, asked Him for forgiveness, and started a new life. And maybe now someone is asking you, “What about baptism?” I want to talk about this very simply. Not as a theologian, and not as someone who wants to impose anything on you. Just as a friend who has thought a lot about this himself. Because baptism is not about religion. It is about your relationship with Jesus.

But wait... why be baptized at all?

When a person truly encounters Jesus, something inside them begins to change. You start to realize: “I don’t want to live the way I used to. I want to leave behind the things that were destroying me. I want to follow Jesus.” This is called repentance.

Repentance is not simply feeling bad about your mistakes. It is not beating yourself up or trying to become a better person through your own strength. It is simply turning around. I was going one direction. Now I want to walk with Jesus. And then baptism comes into the picture.

But Why Do We Need to Go Under the Water?

There is something here worth thinking about calmly. The word “baptism” means immersion. And when you read about how the first followers of Jesus baptized people, you don’t see a few drops of water placed on someone’s head. You see people going into the water.

In one place, a man himself says, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” They go down into the water, he is immersed, and then he comes back up. Why? Because the picture of baptism is beautiful.

You go into the water with your old life. And when you go under the water, it is like saying, “I don’t want to go back to that life.” And when you come up out of the water: “I am beginning a new life.”

It is not magical water. The water itself does not change a person. It is an expression of your faith. Your decision. Your response to Jesus.

Jesus Himself Showed Us the Way

I really love the fact that Jesus never asked us to do something He was unwilling to do Himself. He came to the Jordan River and was baptized. And when you look at Jesus, the question becomes very simple: “If I want to follow Him, do I want to do what He told us to do?”

Not because someone is pressuring you. Not because you have to perform a religious ceremony. Not because your family did it. But because you yourself are saying, “Jesus, I want to follow You.”

What About Being Baptized When I Was a Child?

Maybe you were baptized as a child. Maybe your parents wanted the best for you. Maybe it was a family tradition. Maybe you don’t even remember what happened. I don’t want to take anything away from that. Your parents may have had the best intentions.

But there is one thing a baby cannot do: choose for themselves to follow Jesus.

The disciples of Jesus first preached the good news. People heard it, believed, repented, and then were baptized. So today, the question is not simply, “Has water ever touched your head?” The deeper question is: “Have you personally chosen to follow Jesus?”

Baptism Is Not Your Ticket to God’s Love

And I want to say something very important here. You don’t need to be baptized so that God will finally start loving you. He doesn’t love you more after your baptism than He did before it. Baptism is not a way to earn His love.

It is a response to the love you have already experienced. When you begin to understand what Jesus has done for you, something naturally rises in your heart: “I want to follow You. With all my heart.” And then baptism stops being a burden. It becomes a joy.

This Is Not the End. It Is the Beginning.

Maybe you think that after baptism you have to be perfect. You don’t. You will still make mistakes. You will still have questions. There will still be days when you don’t know what to do. But now you are not walking alone.

Baptism is not the final step. It is one of the first steps into a new life. You are saying, “Jesus, I choose You.” And then the journey begins. Learning to listen to Him. Learning to love people. Learning to forgive. Learning to trust. Learning to live not just for yourself.

And little by little, you discover that following Jesus is not religion. It is life.

So if you believe in Jesus and you feel in your heart that you want to be baptized, don’t let fear, people’s opinions, or old traditions stop you. You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to understand everything. Just come as you are.

If your heart is saying, “Jesus, I want to follow You,” then you can step into the water. And when you go under, remember: your old life does not have to be your master anymore. And when you come back up out of the water, there is a new life ahead of you.

Not religion. Not a ceremony. Not a few drops of water.

Just a person who chose Jesus.
